A DAD HURTS TOO

A DAD HURTS TOO

People don't always see the tears a dad cries,
His heart is broken too when his child dies.
He tries to hold it together and be strong,
Even though his world's gone wrong.

He holds his wife as her tears fall,
Comforts her through it all,
He goes through his day doing what he's supposed to do,
But a piece of his heart has been ripped away too.

So when he's alone he lets out his pain,
And his tears come like falling rain,
His world has crashed in around him,
And a world that was once bright has gone dim.

He feels he has to be strong for others,
But Dads hurt too, not just the Mothers,
He searches for answers but none are to be found,
He hides behind a mask when he is feeling down.

He smiles through his tears,
He struggles and holds in his fears,
But what you see on the outside is not always real,
Men don't always show how they really feel.

So I'd like to ask a favor of you,
The next time you see a mother hurting
over the loss of her child,
please remember.....a Dad hurts too

10 months

Dear Angel
It has been 10 months since I held you in my arms.  10 whole months.  With the double digit, it really feels like a significant milestone.  I still think of you so often, many times a day.  Your daddy and I won’t ever stop missing you.

The other day your Daddy and I were looking at these owls that are living in our cedar tree in the backyard.  A white butterfly flew by next to us and he said "look Angel is here too."

I have been thinking a lot about the day we found out you were gone and the day you were born.  As I have been working on your baby book, it has pulled me back to try to remember details that I can record.  It makes me think about all the things I wish I had done. Like take off your blanket and hat and look at your whole body.  Take more pictures…of you and us holding you…of your hands and feet….I wish I had kept the clothes you wore at the hospital.  How could I not do that?  I wish my brain hadn’t been fogged up with so many drugs. I wish I hadn’t let people make me feel rushed to let go of you.

I am going to be making a memory box to donate the hospital this summer and I hope to help another mom that has lost their baby. In my letter, I will suggest things they could do with their baby, before they leave the hospital. I hope this helps someone else, in your memory.

Angel, your garden is growing so much…we love watching the changes as things fill out and bloom.

Just like we would have loved watching you develop and grow.  I often wonder what you might have looked like if you had lived, and what kinds of things we would be doing together now.

You have changed me so much.  In losing you, I now live with the firsthand understanding of how life can change immeasurably in an instant.   I am trying so hard to not let this cripple me but rather let it inspire me to live fuller.  My soul has grown larger through suffering, Larger for both joy and suffering, weakness and strength, anger and love, despair and hope.

I woke up today to find this photo sent to me from my friend Amanda.  She took the time to write Angel's name in the sand at sunrise this morning, and I am so, so grateful.  This is Corolla Beach on the east coast, where she is on vacation.  Thank you so much!!

One of those days

This week has been so busy I haven't had much time to think about anything.  Then, last night I made the mistake of reading a book by another babyloss mom and her story of loss, right before bed.  I got sucked in because it was sort of like reading about myself, but then I started to have alot of flashbacks too, which made for not a very good sleep.  Which led to being tired today and then hitting a bit of a low point of grief as it all catches up to me.

Today was one of these days:

Tonight I started to work on filling out more of Angel's baby book.   I walked by the shelf and thought about how delinquent I am in completing it, and so I grabbed it and got to work for awhile.  I started it when it first arrived, then put it aside as it was a bit too much.  Tonight I managed to write quite a bit, but I still have more to do.  It is emotionally exhausted to do it, but I also want to do it soon because I don't want to forget things.  I am sure I already have.  Although reading that book last night, I started to remember more from August 10, 2011  & August 11, 2011 that I had forgotten about.

A few moments after I closed the book, I looked out the window to my backyard and a butterfly flew by.

This grief journey is not a race

So many times in the past 10 months I have tried to give myself that "pep talk" about moving forward, choosing joy, not focusing on the grief and the tragedy - yes, tragedy - of what has happened to Jeff & I.

Often when I am going into certain social situations, I psych myself up this way, I mentally prepare to not talk about it (because most people don't want to hear about it or remember it, or think that loss could happen to them too). I prepare myself to laugh and smile and make others feel comfortable. Often, this is at the expense of my own comfort and my own feeling of authenticity with people in my life.

The truth is, I am still a multi-faceted person with many interests, many hopes and dreams, and there are alot of other things I like to focus on and talk about.

But I changed on August 10, 2011, and this is me "after Angel." And I have many, many moments each day where I feel the heartbreak of what happened. I have come to accept that this will never go away.

I know there will be moments now, tomorrow, years from now where I will cry for my first born, my little girl. There is no race to the finish.

The grief will be my constant companion. I believe I will finding healing. But not at the expense of forgetting, or ignoring what happened and how it has shaped who I am today.

"Your timeline for healing is yours. Don't be pressured. Honour your own healing process."

Angel defines and shapes me just as any child would define and shape their mother. She existed, she mattered, she is loved and her life has an impact on my world.

You are my shining star

Jeff and I are enjoying our backyard and Angel's garden so much.  A couple of times this weekend we have talked about how we are so lucky to have everything we do, including our home and our beautiful yard, and eachother of course.  It's hard to believe after the year we've had that we still feel this way, but we do have a deep sense of appreciation for all that is still here. I am grateful for many things.  I am blessed in many ways.  I was blessed to have Angel in my life.

Tending Angel's garden

My friend Amanda sent me this quote this week:

It's so beautiful and true.
___

In reading the other "Right Where I am" posts through Angie's blog, I've been struck by so many poignant and beautiful thoughts about life and loss.  My head is full from reading this week.

One blog talked about how they built a garden for their child that died, and how tending to their garden was a way they could express and act out their love for them.  Angel's garden does the same for me right now, and I love watching it grow.  I go out and look at it every day, to check what is blooming and growing.  I hope she sees the garden and can feel our love for her.
